Zantac Antacid Facts in Answers
Is it bad to take Antacid (tums, zantac, etc.) every day?!? Since about June ive been taking antacids almost everyday. And Most times it multiple times a day. I usually take 5-6 tums a day. but recently started with zantac and that helps with just one. but is it bad to take antacids every day? I dont think its acid reflux as much as its pure stomach pain every time I eat, incredible bloating, indegstion, and food just...it does not digest in my stomach. It literally just sits there unless I take something. I was prescribed prevacid for acid reflux (they thought that may be the problem) but I stopped taking it because I read that it can cause weight gain. so is it bad to take these over the counter antacids every day? What will happen if I do?I dont want to have to take them. Im scared. and eating 5-6 smal meals does not help at all. please help me thanks. im 17, 5'5'', and 110 lbs if that matters

luvcorona_26 replied: "Yes, its bad. You will develop an immunity to them, and sooner or later they won't help u at all. You should take the pre ion medication. Just b/c it says it may cause weight gain, doesn't necessarily mean that it will. Everybody responds to medication differently."

Medicine for antacid called Zantac??? Has anyone taken this medicine and can tell me how long it takes for affect.......did it take hours, days, weeks??? i'm worried because i've been taking it for 2 days and it worked a little but not completely can someone help????

Alfredo Garcia replied: "Zantac is an anti-histamine that reduces acid production. It acts relatively quickly. It doesn't take days to kick in like proton pump inhibitors (e.g. Prilosec). You can also take it preventatively if you anticipate eating a meal that frequently gives you heartburn (e.g. something with tomato sauce). You may need to take it for a few days, and you may not be taking a high enough dose. If you're an adult, you can usually take two of the generic tablets twice daily (four tabs per day at most). In the hospital, it's generally dosed higher than what the bottle says. I think the bottle says to use only 1 tab twice a day."

Doc replied: "If 75 or 150 mg doesn't work, try two times 150 or 300 mg per day. This is weak stuff compared to going UP to Nexium which has more risk and potentially harmful side effects."

Can I take Zantac while on Bentyl? I just got a pre ion for Bentyl for IBS. I've taken Zantac for years for acid reflux. I know that Bentyl is, in part, an antacid, and my mom told me not to take my Zantac while I'm on the Bentyl (3x a day for 3 days, then 2x a day for 2 weeks). My doctor never said anything about it. My guts are still spasming and I have awful heartburn. Can I take the Zantac, or should I just give the Bentyl time? I guess I should add that the drug interacation information says not to take Zantac WITH Bentyl, but I don't know if that means do not take them with the same glass of water, or do not take them on the same day, period.

Steph replied: "The best way to find out..call your pharmacist. He will know exactly what you can or can't take with your new medicine. Whether it's over the counter or pre ion. Since you are suffering. If there aren't any 24 hr pharmacies in your area. Just call one in another city or State...you'll get the info you need."

robert m replied: "Yes."

Nancy replied: "They're actually starting to say that anyone diagnosed with IBS, or anyone with symptoms of IBS should be checked for celiac disease. Here's a link to the information by the National Institutes of health about celiac. ... If that sounds like something that may be going on there are a couple of really good message boards that you can visit to find out more information. I hope you feel better soon. Nancy"

When does Zantac peak? When does Zantac's antacid effect peak from the time of administration of a 24-hour action 300 mg capsule? Ie. When is the stomach acid at it's lowest? Thanks, reference also appreciated

R. Gaspari replied: "I don't know when it peaks with 300 mg but with 150 mg, peak levels are reached at 2 to 3 hours in the 500 ng/mL range."

thun00 replied: "The dose doesnt matter, the peak concentration will be higher but time to "peak" will be the same as this drug has a linear kinetic profile. It will reach its peak in about 2-3 hours. Stomach acid is at its lowest after a meal as food stimulates acid production."

Is is safe to take heart burn medicines while on pre ion drugs? I am on Phenytoin Ex and I was wondering of anything would happen If I took any heartburn medicine like antacids or Zantac.

hothand3 replied: "i too am on pre ion drugs. i think the best thing to do is look up the phenytoin ex and any others that you're on, and look at the drug interactions section, that should tell you something."

Healer (not the dog kind) replied: "The heartburn medicine usually just soaks up or reduces the amount of gastric juice you have. I don't think that would interfere with other medication. Mind you, I have my opinion on heartburn meds, I think they are more of the cause of the problem than the solution, Heart burn if happens over 1/2 hour after meal, usually caused by indigestion, and the fermentation that is the result of the indigestion. So if you don't want heartburn, use bitters before a meal, or something like orange juice (unsweetened) or lemon juice after a meal to help digest your food."

Robinson126 replied: "It is not a wise idea on self-medications, better ask your physician's advice on this medicine."

thorn105 replied: "Your pharmacist can tell you for sure about any interactions. Even if you don't use CVS pharmacy, they are 24 hours, and will answer questions like this over the phone, no problem."

Angel replied: "Get off of ALL drugs, pre ion or otherwise, they are all dangerous to your health and mask the real problem. Doctors are the 2nd leading cause of death in the USA, and are just legal drug pushers. It has become a business and a very lucrative one at that. There are ways that you can actualy CURE what ails you, and not have to keep taking drugs. You are on the wrong diet path altogether and you need to put your diet right. Antacids only make the problem worse in the end and are extremely bad for your stomach, they give a quick relief but don't cure the problem. First of all you have to get your thinking and attitute right, and then change the way and what you are eating. Why I say you have to change your attitude and the way you are thinking,,is because ALL sickness begins in your mind and attitude. Stiff thinking translate into a stiff body over many years. Bitterness and jealousy translates into a cancer that is literally 'eating your body" (I am NOT saying this is your problem, I am pointing out how we get to the stage where we think we need to be medicated with drugs) Doctors are not taught the first causes of any sickness or how to treat them. For example....an anxious person is always thinking negatively and worrying, this tightens the stomach (unconsciously) and if this has been going on for a long time it causes problems with digestion. It also follows that anxiety and stress (which is coming from the mind) can lead to "comfort eating" and that usually means foods that are high in acid, this compounds the stomach problem. The human body needs to be more alkaline than acid to keep it in perfect health. So to get the stomach back to it's alkaline state, eat more of the alkaline foods. Google is a good way to find out which ones. Also stop worrying or being anxious, it solves nothing, get to a good meditation class or go to see a comedy at the pictures, anything to get the mind off what it is that is causing the anxiety. So now we come to the FIRST cause of the problem, (the acid reflux, heartburn) is the outcome of the problem, and antacids are only a band aid. The first cause of the problem is whatever it is that makes a person anxious, and once THAT is fixed, the heartburn and acid, tight stomach will disappear. You can apply this to ANY of your health problems. It is the same thing, find out what is causing your ailment, what are you continually thinking? are you angry, bitter, jealous, or in the habit of thinking negatively? and once you can pin that down and get THAT fixed, you won't need drugs. Then get your diet right, eat properly and sensibly, and don't abuse your stomach and body by putting the wrong fuel in and then expecting a drug to fix it. Sorry if I didn't write what you wanted to read, but I know that the path you are on is leading to dependence on the doctor who is making a very nice regular income from selling their drugs. Angel"

minx replied: "Please don't take the antacids ....... Angel is right mate ..... they do nought to solve the actual cause of the heart burn and will only serve to temporarily bandaid it at best ..... instead try to pinpoint the cause ..... this could be as simple as food intolerances ........ such as milk and dairy ...... which are, by the way notoriously hard to digest ........ acid reflux, constant belching, bloating and gassiness, constipation and diaorrhea, achy bones, insomnia are all symptoms produced by lactose intolerance ...... try ditching the milk and dairy for a few days and eat more leafy and green vegies, organic nuts and seeds like almonds, brazil nuts and sunflower seeds, fresh tuna and salmon ....... all are rich in calcium ...... ensure you also get 10 - 15 mins daily of safe sun exposure as calcium needs vitamin D for effective assimilation ......... go the leafy greens i reckon........ they are also rich in magnesium (the antistress mineral) ........ eat them for that reason alone and you won't look back.......... foods rich in magnesium will also increase the level of hydrochloric acid in your tummy thus aiding in digestion and helping to resolve any issues you may also have with constipation........ magnesium rich foods will also help to lower high blood pressure, nervous tension, muscle twitching, headaches and migraines and reduce your stress levels dramatically. peace baby "

How long do side effects of Zantac last? I have a couple questions, actually... 1.) What are the most common of the common side effects? I read online that its mostly constipation, diarrhea, and headaches. 2.) Also, do most people get side effects from Zantac, or just a few? 3.) And, when taking Zantac, can you take antacid tablets for the side effects? 4.) How long do the side effects last? An hour, a day? Entire time you take it, or just the one time? If you can answer these sincerely and give me a resource of some kind, that'd be great. Thank you!

Why do i keep burping all the time even though I am taking an acid reducer for acid reflux disease? Well i was diagnosed with acid reflux (gerd or what ever) about a year ago, and now i burp ALL the time, quite loudly, and not just a little burp, sometimes more like a belch. Its really embarassing and I was wondering if the antacid (generic brand of Zantac) is supposed to be making me do this? I'm a girl in my early teens.

I accept Chaos replied: "I think that it is the acid reflux causing this."

MommyPlusHalf replied: "The gases are being released via belching. Be lucky its not coming out the other end lol. jk. But really, it does have to come up, or it will stay in your tummy and keep botherin you."

Kuroryu no Yoru replied: "Even though you are taking preventive medications, you should still try to avoid highly acidic foods, such as: Tomatoes, oranges, vinegar, etc."

What is the quickest way to get rid of trapped wind ? I have a lot of discomfort in my chest and upper stomach, caused by trapped wind, I've tried a fizzy drink, antacid tablets, ranitidine (Zantac) and a glass of warm milk. It's still there.

Rock_chickie_rock replied: "Honestly i know you have tried fizzy drinks but try lemonade, works a charm"

T H replied: "I always lay on the floor with my legs up high and keep bending my knees towards my chest. that will usually do it."

gail replied: "two things i know work really well. clarnico soft mints and believe it or not, celery.... obviously the mints are a more handy option and i take them everywhere. they take away all sorts of pains in that area."

flutterby replied: "I like gaviscon liquid. Make sure you are sitting up though."

Papaver replied: "Marvelous stuff!!"

How can I stop farting? I love milk but it always makes me fart up a storm, it's getting ridiculous. Is there any way to counter this or stop this? (ie take an antacid or zantac or something) Oh and don't tell me to stop drinking milk, it ain't gonna happen.

Marching band Rulz! replied: "no offence i have the same problem, just whatever makes you have gas, for instance ,milk or cheese, then try to stay away from it, o and gas x help bunches."

BoredAgain replied: "Gas-X"

Cadence M replied: "put a cork in it."

truefirstedition replied: "You might be mildly lactose intolerant. You can get a medicine called Lactaid at most drugstores - no pre ion needed. Take it before you start eating/drinking a lot of dairy. It might help you out."

Jeffery M. Turner, Esq. replied: "Its simple really... Try some cinnamon in it."

Mother of 4 ANGELS replied: "All four of my young boys are VERY gassy, especially during sex. The cinnamilk works like a charm for all of them"

Gustus S replied: "Before my wife died of Cancer in 1989 I use to fart in my rocking chair and she would make me eat a banana..."

R.N. Huan replied: "Switch to goat, canine, or breast milk. Trying the latter may strike you as strange, however acceptance for adult consumption of breast milk is on the rise. Check the local paper for a breast milk bank. Some banks will only supply milk if you provide proof of an infant living in the household, but slowly that is changing as more and more banks are willing to sell to any buyer. Call them and find out. The health benefits are amazing and you will no longer experience your gas problems."

Dr. Arnold replied: "It has been scientifically proven that when you drink more milk if it causes you to fart, it will force your body to adapt to the digestion of it and cause less farting."

Wanna be Chef! replied: "Dont quit drinking milk but you are lactose intallerent."

Mark W replied: "Why would you want to stop? It's a great talent to have and your friends and co-workers will love you for it."
