How long does it take for Levaquin to cure a UTI? I took my first dose of Levaquin about 1 1/2 hrs ago for a UTI.. I'm SOOOO uncomfortable. How long before it relieves these annoying symptoms. Can I take AZO tablets at the same time?

Livingstrong replied: "Levaquin is a quinolone antibiotic (Levofloxacin) that needs to be absorbed into your blood stream after you take it orally and then it is distributed into the infected tissue in your body, in your case it's the infected tissue of the bladder and urine. For all this process to take effect it has to pass at least 24 hrs. for you to start feeling a little better. It will take about 72 hrs for you to feel 100% OK. In the meantime, YES, you can take AZO tablets (1 tablet every 8 hrs) to alleviate the symptoms so you don't feel so comfortable."

silentrefuge86 replied: "I am not sure if you can take AZO tablets at the same time. I would call your pharmacist and ask him. He would be the best person to answer that question. Levaquin is a pretty strong antibiotic. You should start seeing results within a day or two. I know it's uncomfortable, but you are not going to see relief in just a couple hours. You have to give the antibiotic time to run through your body and to start taking effect. If you don't start seeing results within 3 days maximum then you need to go back into the doctor. I think you should start feeling relief sometime tomorrow. Good luck."

I have a UTI and now a fever but i don't think the levaquin is working? I get UTI's about every 3 months, and i do everything the doctor has told me to prevent them but i still get them, anyway i went to the doctor and they prescribed me 3 days worth of levaquin at 500 mg each, i took the second one last night but i don't think its going away, levaquin worked great when i took it the last time, could i become immune to it because i became immune to bactrim, today i think i have a fever, am i getting this because my body is trying to fight off the infection?

Cari N replied: "You may need a 7 day course of a stronger antibiotic. I had a UTI only once in my life, and my doctor said he always prescribes a 7 day course of antibiotics. He feels that a 7 day course is better than 3 days. You should get another appt to be seen."

Jenna * replied: "hey i have frequent uti problems too..and i recently went to the urologist and he asked me if i ever have fevers in conjunction with the uti's i said no which indicated that i dont have something worse...you should call your doctor or a urologist and tell them you have a fever...you might have cystitis or something like that.....i think thats what my urologist said...."

Shannon V replied: "Call your doctor if you have a fever after 24 hours on the meds they are not working."

can i drink alcohol when im taking Levaquin for my uti/ kidney infection? I have been on the medicine for about 5 days and i feel fine now and just wondering if i could have only like one beer or so when im on this medicine??

stevepitt2 replied: "You could probably get away with one beer."

Willow replied: "i really wouldn't. There are alot of medications that if mixed with alcohol it affects the heart and you could have a heart attack and die. we don't want that. so don't take any chances and just wait till you are off the meds to have a drink ok? please. i hope you feel better."

bonb49931 replied: "Probably wouldn't interact too much...but watch out. Drinking alcohol while you have a UTI or a kidney infection (even if it's being treated) could make it WAY worse. I went out drinking once after I thought I was all done with UTI for 4 days and woke up the next morning pissing blood. Not fun."

Levaquin for UTI ....can I find drug in Singapore? I am an expat from the US and was just diagnosed with a UTI. My Dr. in Singapore recommended I be treated with a intravenous antibiotic which would mean having to have a heplock inserted and visiting the Dr.'s office twice per day for 7 days. This seems severe considering that my bacteria count is 100,000 and I'm not experiencing any fever or pain. I have had many UTI in the past 20 yrs and never have I had to have intrevenous drugs to treat. I have called my Dr. in US and am waiting for reply. Nurse also mentioned she thought intrevenous antibiotics was a severe treatment and that Levaquin and Cipro were drugs of choice. I have had Levaquin in the past and it's excellent. If I can obtain pre ion can I purchase this drug in Singapore and from which pharmacy?? Please reply soon.

Pr!nc3$$ replied: "drink or eat carnberries they really work"

Aunt Belle replied: "If you can get Levaquin or Cipro, they will work for a UTI. It's best to take something you've had before so you don't have an allergic reaction in Singapore. Just make sure you take the full course of antibiotics and drink a lot of water. In my experience, you don't get an intravenous antibiotic for a UTI unless it has turned into a kidney infection. Does the doctor think for some reason that it has? I would pursue that discussion; do you really not have fever? lower back/flank pain? headache? If none of the above, indeed it's odd. (If he thinks you have a kidney infection, you should probably get the IV; kidney infections can cause kidney damage (plus being miserable).) Just in general, I wonder whether you should look for a new doctor? If you told this doctor you wouldn't get an IV, would he give you an Rx for Levaquin? I don't know whether either of these are available where you are--sorry."

$$$ replied: "i think you need the doctor's pre ion for that, especially if its a controlled drugs, cos you won't get controlled drugs easily here in Singapore, maybe you can also try search 88db to look for any medicine that is suitable for you and could help you get well, alternatively, maybe you can try using the TCM if it works.....hope this helps"

I have a UTI but i don't think the levaquin is working? wantsshy replied: "The bacteria could possibly have become resistant. Finnish the last pill and if you still don't have relief call the doctor. You should also set up an appointment with a urologist to make sure there isn't something else going on. Hopefully they actually cultured your urine sample. Also you may need a prophylactic course of antibiotics like say you might take one macrobid after each time you have sex, for several months to one year"

T H replied: "Levaquin is a very good medication for UTI's. Please take the full dose of the medication. Normal dosing for an uncomplicated UTI is 250-500 mg qd x3 days. If after the third day is done and you are not feeling better, call your doctor's office, and see what they want to do. As I said Levaquin is a very good drug. There is not a lot of resistance especially in UTI's unless you picked your infection up in the hospital (e.g MRSA/MDRSA)."

Icyelene R replied: "Yes if you take it too much. The signs are like being allergic to it."

Karen F replied: "Some infections can become resistant to a certain antibiotic I would get another test for your infection. Also there are over the counter test for uti now you can get one and see it it test positive also the lab can tell you if your infection is resistant to this antibiotic. It will take about 3 days in the mean time make sure you drink a lot of cranberry juice or take azo cranberry pills. and water to flush this out I would drink 5 bottles of 20oz waters."

Barbra replied: "If you are seeing a doctor about this; call him and ask what you should do now. Maybe, you need to see him again."

jannsody replied: "You may becoming immune to the antibiotic. If you are having so many uti's, I would suggest getting a referral to a urologist to try to find out a cause or such. For the pain of a uti, there is the over-the-counter Azo standard though Not in place of an antibiotic. Feel better soon!"

emt_me911 replied: "Cipro is usually the antibiotic of choice for a UTI. If the Levaquin hasn't worked, see if your doctor will prescribe that. Also, the last time I had a UTI, I had to take Cipro for 10 days. Three days seems much too short a course in order to be effective. EMT"

Can I take azo with levaquin for a UTI? for a urinary tract infection would it be okay to take the azo standard (which has Phenazopyridine Hydrochloride) with levaquin (levoflaxin) a prescribed antibiotic which kills the bacteria in about 3 days but doesn't make me feel any better till then. I tried also motrin/tylenol with no relief!!! I need/want to know tonight!!! Thanks

UTI with back pain, will Levaquin work? ok so i have back pain for a while after i ate ciproflaxin 500mg 7 days for my UTI but i think my doctor didnt gave me enough dose to clear it up so the back pain appeared. Now 3 weeks later , i finnaly could meet my doctor , she gave me LEVAQUIN 500mg for 7 days. will it work?? i just really want to clear this annoying pain and UTI up but the doctor dont seem to give me enough dose.....

jandy replied: "you need urine cultured and checked for sensitivities. usually Septra/Bactrim is first choice, but you may have another bacteria. Also , any STD's. as far as the pain/discomfort, Azostat or uristat will stop the burning/urgency only, it will not clear the infection. it turns urine orange/stains clothing. can buy at Walmart, usually need 1-2 doses before noticing lessened discomfort. drink lots of fluids, doesn't have to be cranberry,. be careful, if not treated correctly, it will go to your kidneys and you won't feel urgency/burning, maybe back pain, but you might dismiss that until you get sicker w fever/nausea/blood in urine. take care."

moshi moshi replied: "Why don't you try on going to a chiropractor this might help you a lot with your backpain. Chiropractor mentors had taught me a lot of things"

I took Levaquin and then Cipro for a UTI but I might had/have a Bladder infection - how do I know I'm cured? I have a UTI, took 5 days of Levaquin but didn't feel it was done - so got 5 days of Cipro. - I do feel much better. But I still have pain in back, not sure if it's side effects from Cipro OR a bladder infection. If I had one, dont you think the pills would have gotten rid of it? I have noticed black flecks in the toilet. Going to monitor if it's after I pee. Sorry TMI :)

dietmonitor replied: "You need to go to the doc NOW!!! back pain is associated with nephritis (kidney infection), especially if you also have blood in the urine (which could explain the black in the loo). check your temp also. I had kidney infection and was in hospital for 3 days! and if its not treated it can be fatal! so please PLEASE go to the doc today (or the hospital if you have blood in the urine and an elevated temp)!"

julie replied: "You should be better by now from the antibiotics. You bay have a kidney stone that is causing pain and infection. You need to call your doc and ask him what to do and if the pain gets to bad go to ER. You may need a ct scan and definitely some blood work to check for infection, kidney function, and possible damage from kidney stones. Hope this helps."

juneaulady replied: "Go back to dr and have a followup urinalysis done if you are concerned."

suze replied: "Basically I would go online and look up the side affects of Cipro. I have had several utis they stink!!! I did take Levaquin it did get rid of my uti. I did not have anymore pains in my back. Basically I would call my doctor back and tell him or her the symptoms that you are having. Its better to be safe then sorry."

Dani replied: "You might be better off seeing medical attention from your local ER or calling your doctor who prescribed the medication. I have taken Cipro before, but it never helped me enough. I have never taken the other drug, but have heard of it. Why did they give you two different drugs? I am currently myself going through a UTI and had the very same symptoms as you, minus the black flecks. Best to get a stronger med and a better diagnosis. I'm currently on Bactrim twice a day for 10 days."

my wife was diagnosed with a UTI about a week ago they gave her levaquin which we had to go to the ER for? last night becasue she couldn't breathe... today she is having really bad back pain and she thinks it could possibly be Pelvic inflammatory disease is there any physical signs of this? If so what are they please only people who have experienced this problem the urine tested negative for the uti and kidney infection

kkatiellen replied: "When I had a UTI, the doctor kept asking me if I had lower back pain. She said that this would indicate a Kidney Infection that was caused by an advanced stage of the UTI. So, If it's lower, then I would suggest considering that. They seemed to have put a lot of emphasis on that when I had it."

Did anyone take LEVAQUIN for a UTI? My doc prescribed me this antibiotic, but I don't want to take it.? Did anyone take it? side effects? helped them? Or should I wait it out?

Republican Girl replied: "It made me extremely nauseas. But, they effect people differently. I wouldn't wait it out. Atleast try it, and if you have bad side effects, call the dr. for something else. I did stop taking mine after the 2nd dose, but got on something else. can't remember what it was, but it cleared it up."

REB replied: "If the Doctor prescribed it, you should take it as prescribed until it is gone. I have never taken Levaquin, but a brochure telling about the medication should have come with it or you can direct any questions to your Doc or Pharmacy. UTI's are serious and need to be treated, I have seen some people get really sick from what started out as a UTI. If you have any uncomfortable symptoms you can take AZO over the counter to relieve any pain or burning. If you have any reactions from this medicine you can let your Doctor know, but I wouldn't wait it out if you have an infection it needs to be treated, I wouldn't take any chances with a UTI, it can get severe enough to put you in the hospital. Take care of yourself!"

Tiger Lily replied: "yes i had levaquin. they are huge and extremly hard to swallow -_- it made me a bit queasy but take them after eating a meal because it'll make your stomach hurt if you don't."
