SPIRONOLACTONE Ffor my ACNE and over productive OILY SKIN and hair? i went to the dermatologist today wiht my acne and over productive oily skin and hair and he prescribes me spironolactone and some other products has anyone been prescribed this and how well has it worked for you?
Ugo replied: "Spironolactone is a diuretic. I've been prescribed it before for that reason, to combat water retention, but for acne? I've never heard of that to be honest although I do know it affects your hormone levels also so perhaps that's why you've been given it. I must say I do sometimes get acne as well and while taking spironolactone I never noticed any difference one way or the other with it. But we are all different!"
Ive been on Spironolactone for 2 years & my skin has been really clear;but ive been breaking out lately!? Has anyone experienced this before? I was thinking either it's the sun exposure (although this didnt happen last year when i was out in the sun) or reaction to something. I just wokeup and started getting little bumps again around my cheeks and forehead. Does anyone have any ideas to what it is? What do I do?
Tracy replied: "Sun exposure usually HELPS your skin. My best guess is that your body is becoming used to the Spironolactone and therefore it's not having as strong of an effect for you. Ask your doc if you can up the dose!"
mrs1123 replied: "skin rash. can be related to Spironolactone call your Doctor and tell him about the Rash. He might pull you off of the med
Spironolactone is used in some cases for women for acne related to hormonal changes.
I guess it cold be heat related. I I took Spironolactone before and I didn't have skin bumps.
OK I found a better website.

Has anyone used Spironolactone for acne? I just got the Mirena IUD and it's causing some spots to appear on my skin. I want to try Spironolactone. Has anyone had success with this drug for acne?
panda9386 replied: "I work for a dermatologist and Spironolactone is a great treatment for acne stemmed from hormonal causes. It helps keeps your hormones in balance, and if your acne is coming from your IUD which happens if you get one with progesterone, Spironolactone is the best option for treatment, seeing as you don't need to be on an oral contraceptive."
On spironolactone (diuretic). How much water should I drink to stay hydrated? I'm currently on a diuretic called spironolactone for pcos symptoms, and I think I'm experiencing mild dehydration (sunken eyes, pale flabby skin, dizziness). I'm trying to drink as much water as possible. It just seems like it's not enough though. How much water should I be drinking, and is there anything else I can do for my body to stay hydrated?
Kristi H replied: "My grandmother had to take a diuretic for congestive heart failure...it was the one you mention.
What her physician had her do was weigh herself first thing in the morning, and then re-weigh at night.
If she showed she lost weight, then she had to drink more water the next day, because that meant she was losing her water and becoming dehydrated.
Also, she was advised to eat more "wet" fruits like watermelons and cantaloupe...she had to stay away from some things, however, because of her heart and other medicines.
Hope this helps you at all."
chamie replied: "If you are mildly dehydrated, you need to drink enough liquid to replace the fluids you have lost. Also, you need to replace the electrolytes you have lost. Drinking sips of water slowly, along with eating the typical American diet, which is high in salt, will replace fluids and salts you have lost. You should see a health care provider if you are feeling confused, dizzy, or faint or if you have persistent nausea or vomiting.
You can replace fluids and electrolytes by drinking sports drinks or other oral rehydration solutions (ORS). Drink the solution right away. Do not wait until dehydration becomes severe.
Packets of oral rehydration salts are widely available. Mix the contents of a packet with 1 quart or liter of drinking water. If you are not sure if the water is safe to drink, first boil the water for at least 5 minutes.
If you don't have a sports drink or ORS packet, you can make an oral rehydration solution using the following recipe: To 1 quart or liter of drinking water or boiled water, add the following:
2 tablespoons sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon baking soda (bicarbonate of soda).
If you don't have any baking soda, add another 1/4 teaspoon of salt. If possible, add 1/2 cup orange juice or some mashed banana to improve the taste and provide some potassium.
Drink sips of the ORS every 5 minutes until urination becomes normal. (It's normal to urinate 4 or 5 times a day.) Adults and large children should drink at least 3 quarts or liters of ORS a day until they are well.
Good Luck!"
Sarah replied: "It does sound like you're dehydrated. Unfortunately, without knowing your whole medical history, I can't advise you on what to do- have you talked to the person who prescribed you the spironolactone about what to do?"
Does anyone know if I can take minocycline & spironolactone together? I have adult cystic acne at the age of 34 and I am getting married in Sept so I am absolutely desperate for something to clear my skin before then.I have also read great things about the drug Spironolactone on many websites.
But I wasn't sure if you take it by it self or can I take Minocycline with it??????
thx again.
angela replied: "Results and side effects will vary from individual to individual , as we know nothing of your medical history it is not possible for us to give a reliable answer. Check with your dermatologist , doctor or chemist."
Is long term menstrual spotting from Spironolactone use dangerous? I'm a 40-yr-old woman and have been taking 100 mg of Spiro daily for the past year for acne and oily skin. It has worked wonders and has cleared up my skin tremendously. However, the spiro causes me to spot 2 weeks into my monthly cycle, and the spotting lasts longer than my normal period. Is this hurting my health? What health problems can this create long term?
I've tried reducing my dosage, but either the spotting doesn't go away or the anti-acne/anti-oil effects do.
RoSes R bLUe replied: "Hi, unfortunately I can't answer any of your questions as a doctor could, but I was just prescribed Spironolactone from my dermatologist yesterday. She gave me 25 mg to start with, twice a day. I will also be taking it for hormonal acne. I was told it could cause my periods to be irregular, but I haven't been on it long enough to say whether that's going to be the case.
Getting back to you though, I wouldn't worry about the spotting hurting your health...it sounds like more of an inconvenience than anything. Have u talked to your GYN doctor? If not, I would highly recommend that. Are u aware that Spironolactone has been shown to cause tumors in rats? While on this medication, regular breast exams are a good idea, whether cancer runs in your family or not. As far as long term problems caused by frequent spotting...you might begin menopause before you even have to worry about that. Still, it's important to go over these concerns with your doctor. Have u tried YAZ birth control for your acne? I heard it really improves your skin. That will be my next oral medication to try if the Spiro doesn't work out.
Anyway, good luck to you. I know what it's like to have a face full of acne... it rips your soul apart. I wish you all the best- don't forget to talk to your Gynecologist :)"
Menstual Cycle and Spironolactone? I am a little confused. I stopped talking birth control over a year ago. 6 months later, my face started to break out in ways I have never experienced. 4 months later, I went to a dermatologist to see about clearing it up.
She said that my hormones probably were out of whack due to the birth control and gave me Spironolactone to take. My skin has been great-I've been taking it for 6 months. Then we moved to a new city and I have to wait for my new health insurance to kick in with my new job.
The last couple of months, I have had mid-cycle spotting-very brownish. I was concerned the first month. The second month (I spotted twice in a 50 day cycle) I figured it was a side effect of the spiro combined with the stress of moving. This month, I am on day 21 (of a typical 38-42 day cycle) and I'm cramping and bleeding, not just spotting. I'm a little concerned!
Does Spiro have effects like this? Is this normal?
And no-we are not trying to get pregnant.
I am 28 years old and active. I also am active and do some sort of physical activity almost daily.
seallover22181 replied: "I have taken spiro before but never experienced this. You should consult your doctor, please."
mercyyless replied: "don't save on the wrong things. Go see a Gynecologist. And don't let him talk you in to taking hormones if you don't want to. Start a exercise program, especially jogging and within 2 months you will see your body straightening out. You did not say how old you are. It could be menopausal if you are in your 40s"

I'm a 26 year old female with facial hair. Will Vaniqa cream or Spironolactone help??? Any other ideas??? I've got fair skin and fair hair, so electrolysis is not an option. I really don't want to have to wax/shave my face. Has anyone tried Vaniqa cream? If so, do you know if it can be used in combination with Retin-A cream (I use that for acne). Also, has anyone tried Spironolactone (Aldactone)? Any other ideas for me??? Thank you so much for your help!
Hippie24 replied: "I use Sally Hansen's Wax Strip Kit. I know you said you didn't want to wax, but it's really easy and keeps you hairless for a long time."

Can i stop taking spironolactone, now that my acne is all gone? I was prescribed spironolactone 25mg twice a day for my acne problem. I've been on this medication for almost an year now. Havent seen many side effects of the drug except weight loss. i have lost some 5 pounds overall but my skin has improved a lot. Havent had any new acne for 3 months now.
I dont want to loose any more weight, because i am already skinny; now that my skin is so much better, can i stop taking the drug?
if i do so, would my acne come back?
Jasmyn replied: "Hi all, I tested this brand new diet supplement from**http%3a//forath.beststardiet.info. They have a risk free trial on right now. What it does, is rinse out your insides, there can be as much as twenty lbs in there, and no degree of diet and working out is likely to get rid of it. Give it a try out - I did, and shed 17 lbs LOL!!!"
brickhouse replied: "You should ask your doctor when to stop taking it. I'm assuming your acne was more hormonal and if so, you should see about a birth control that will keep your hormone balance. Your weight will return. The medication is also a water pill."
What can high potassium levels cause? I have been taking a drug called Spironolactone for acne, prescribed by my dermatologist.
It can raise your potassium levels, and I am experiencing symptoms of this, such as headache and leg cramping and muscle tightness.
I am actually coming off of the medication, I don't feel it is working at all for my skin, but are my potassium levels going to be ok? Should I be worried about any complications?
This may be a stupid question, but should I avoid bananas when taking a oral medication that effects potassium levels?
