Prozac And Ocd Facts in Questions
What does Prozac contain for a person diagnosed with OCD? I've seen that Prozac is prescribed for people diagnosed with OCD, but what are its ingredients? Which chemical helps people with OCD? OCD is obsessive-compulsive disorder.

J Z replied: "It is fluextine hydrochloride, that is the chemical in prozac."

mattfro66 replied: "Antidepressants (SSRIs) such as fluoxetine (for example, Prozac), fluvoxamine (Luvox), and sertraline (Zoloft) are commonly prescribed to treat OCD. These medicines are taken as tablets or capsules. The medicine venlafaxine can also help symptoms of OCD. The tricyclic antidepressant clomipramine (Anafranil) is sometimes used as well. Antidepressants are used to relieve the obsessive thoughts and subsequent compulsive behaviors in those who have OCD. By increasing the level of serotonin in the brain, antidepressants help to regulate the communication between different parts of the brain."

kiwihelen70 replied: "Prozac is one of a class of drugs called selective seritonin reuptake inhibitors or SSRIs. Its active compound (and generic name) is fluoxetine The drugs work by increasing the amount of seretonin (a neutotransmitter) in the spaces between the nerve cells in the brain. No one is quite sure why, but this chemical change helps many people with mental health problems such as depression, anxiety and OCD. I personally did not benefit from SSRIs much for my depression/anxiety but did much better on a related group of drugs called SNRIs (Selective noradrnaline reuptake inhibitors)"

elle replied: "It is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor. It keeps some of the serotonin in your brain from being taken back up into the neurons after it is released. What it does is kind of regulates your serotonin system. It's complicated--not as simple as increasing serotonin levels in your brain, works on receptor regulation and everything. Why does it work? We don't know too much. Prozac is effective for many different disorders (depression, anxiety), which probably reflects both how much the disorders have in common and how prozac produces a general effect on the neurotransmitter systems--it's not specific. And what it will do is kind of relieve your symptoms. Don't get the notion that it is "correcting" a "chemical imbalance" in your brain. It's not that simple. It's actually more like taking advil to get rid of your headache. You don't have a headache because of a lack of advil, but it will still decrease your symptoms."

vatot7 replied: "all I can tell you that IT REALLY WORKS FOR PEOPLE THAT HAVE OCD"

Can anyone tell me how Prozac works on OCD people? I've been searching thru the internet about how Prozac works on people with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. I already know what OCD is, the treatment and stuff. What i don't understand is how Fluoxetine (Prozac), which deals with serotonin, specifically reduce OCD. ThX

JP replied: "OCD is a form of anxiety. Prozac is a drug classified in the SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors). The drugs pharmacological actions cause the leaky (in cases such as OCD) axons to contain more serotonin at the extracellular level. The increase in serotonin allows the brain to send transmission to specific receptor sites that allow our bodies to be more calm and feel good. Serotonin is a key player in diet, mood, sleep, and much more. A lack of it is associated in depression, anxiety, and compulsiveness. With more available, serotonin decreases the anxiety that leads to the compulsiveness."

i have ocd and i have been prescribed 60omg of prozac and 10 mg of clomipramine since september 2008? i have ocd and i have been prescribed 60omg of prozac and 10 mg of clomipramine since september 2008. during the time i have smoked weed and drank alcohol. nothing big really happened...i did it almost everyweekend, or everyother weekend. can anyone tell me how it is affecting me. and if i shud keep on doing it.. ?

Insomniac replied: "Damn, I'm on 30mg of Prozac"

scrubsluvah replied: "i'm on 40 mg of prozac and 100 of wellbutrin it doesn't affect the medecine, the medecine affects the effect of the high, so having one glass of wine is like having three with certain medecines. you just get higher. you can do what you want. personally i suggest not doing it, but you don't have to listen to me, it's your choice."

Blackcompe replied: "What's your worries? Are you having adverse affects after drug use? Marijuana usually doesn't affect pre ion medications, but alcohol surely can. Be careful, especially if the medication are sedating per se."

Why / How does Prozac help OCD? I'm on Prozac, a very low dose..10 mg..and it has erased almost all of my OCD. Im just wondering how it works, the science behind it? 2003bf - Haha you sound exactly like me I was terrified to take it too at first. We anxiety types are all the same lol!

epik555 replied: "It works the same way it helps depression. Low serratonin levels and it helps to re-elevate them to help the symptoms subside."

2003bf replied: "ask your health care provider or the pharmacy when you pick up your next RX. I was prescribed Prozac but i am AFRAID to take them for the fear it might counter act and do the opposite or make me worse. I am TRULY HAPPY THAT IT HAS HELPED KEEP IT UP."

Rocketman on vacation replied: "Prozac is a selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitor (SSRI), meaning it keeps more serotonin- a neurotransmitter- in the junctions between nerve cells, allowing more signaling between the cells. OCD is an "off label" use of Prozac, which is labeled for major depression, but this improvement in signaling obviously helps with OCD, and it is widely used for this. What causes OCD? That is more controversial, but since improving the availability of serotonin at these nerve junctions helps, difficulty or delay in signaling probably is at it's heart. There are more things being discovered about the functioning of the brain every day, and as we learn more, we will have better answers. In only the last few years we have learned that the "glial" cells of the brain are not just structural supports for neurons, but are quite active in metabolism, waste removal (they metabolize ammonia), and they manufacture myelin which "insulates" nerve axons and thus help coordinate the transmissions of the neurons. Keep up on "brain news" with an on-line clipping service. It will be educational and fun! Glad it works for you!"

Has anyone here taken prozac for ocd? What did you think of it?

mirit s replied: "i have indeed taken prozac for OCD. It didn't work for me, but that could have been a reaction with my other medication. i sugjest that if your docter wants you to try it, you should because every body is different. Good luck!"

nicole replied: "I did, and it didnt work for me, i didnt see any difference. it might just depend on the person though. i also took zoloft for ocd and depression and i didnt see any difference with that either."

YA Junkie replied: "Hi: I suffer from major depression, and I have a friend who has severe OCD. No drugs have helped him, but I hope your case is less serious than his. What I do know is that the following meds have been used fairly successfully to treat OCD: luvox, prozac, paxil, celexa, zoloft, anafranil, and effexor. As you may know, the 1st five meds are antidepressants called SSRIs. Anafranil is an older drug (a tricylic antidepressant). It is probably the first and most widely researched med for OCD. Effexor is an SNRI that recently is being studied more and more for OCD. I copied the info below from the link that is in the Source. I'm sorry I can't give you first-hand info on prozac and OCD. If you asked about meds for depression, I could write a book about it. Hope this info helps. __________________________________________________________ t appears that for most people high dosages of these drugs are required to obtain antiobsessional effects. The studies done to date suggest that the following dosages may be necessary: Luvox (up to 300 mg/day), Prozac (40-80 mg/day), Zoloft (up to 200 mg/day), Paxil (40-60 mg/day), Celexa (up to 80 mg/day), Anafranil (up to 250 mg/day). Where a lower dosage was listed, some studies have suggested that a dose lower than the minimum was not significantly better than a placebo. I have also seen a small number of patients who have not responded to large dosages of each of these medications. Some improved on extremely low doses, such as 5-10 mg/day of Prozac or 25 mg/day of Anafranil. These patients have not been carefully studied: and, to my knowledge, these low-dosage responders are not reported in the psychiatric literature. If patients fail to improve with high dosages of the above medications, it is probably worth a trial of a very low dose."

help with ocd prozac? First i haven not been diegnosed with OCD. Second docs reccomended prozac but i refuse to take it. Now, my problem is for about 1 month and 2 weeks i have been deeling with Obsessive problems, the first weeks i was deeling with obsessing over a bathroom problem of bowel movements. then i got obsessed over being clean after a bowel movement, after that i got obsees over ticks and thought i had a pressure feeling in my anus, later i got obsessed of an eye tick. IT seems to me like all day i analize and look for symptoms of in a way stress to much over somthing that in the first palce is not a healthproblem at all. All day i ponder of negative thoughts and how i am not feeling good and it causing trouble in my job and in my daily life by be being constantly distracted. I am usualy very very sharp minded and cannot stand the fact that all this nonsense is happening to me. Its the fact i dont belive in my slef and i keep on doubting that ther may be something wrong. WHats wrong? Ever since i got the "OCD" i lost interest in all my hobbies and donot whant to think of anything else but my ocd. It like if i felt comfortable thinking about it. Im afraid to stop thinking about my obsession, in a way i becomes a sort of threat to my mind to stop thinking about it. theres is a fear there to stop thinking taht there is something wrong wtih me. I have stoped being the sharp person i am and i am not so lazy and normal.

Lana_lienka replied: "check out my question about why my life sucks ever since i stopped taking prozac and started taking effexor."

john carcerano psych counselor replied: ".I will advise you how to get free and cheap counseling, and what to do to control your OCD. I learned how to get a good grip on my OCD. if you want to see a therapist and can't afford one, then call your states social services department and ask them where you can get free help. most states, especially in the big cities offer free counseling with a psychiatrist and you can qualify for free meds from the big drug companies. they may charge on a sliding scale for a shrink, i went a long time ago when i needed help and i had to pay $6.00 per session. make some calls, it's all there for you. heres how i controlled my OCD, and it has caused me all sorts of problems in my life. i bacame an alcoholic for 14 years due to the anxiety from my OCD. i've been alcohol and drug free for 13 years now. don't drink or do drugs because this will only make your OCD worse. especially as you come down form substances because of the anxiety and stress that is associated with the comedown. coke and uppers will fuel your OCD severely and stay away from caffiene because this will also fuel your OCD. i am white knuckling it now as far as not taking any meds for my OCD, but i have learned to cut out stress in my life at a very good rate. don't get worked up about things. this will cause your stress and anxiety level to rise and severely impact your OCD symptoms. I should go on meds because when i took 100 milligrams of Luvox my OCD symptoms were reduced by 70%. i also learned to drink caffiene free teas at night and sometimes when i feel a bit anxious I will add cava cava or Valerian root to my tea. I will even at times take melatonin to help me relax at night. i even learned to practice ignoring my OCD when it demands that I perform rituals. It's hard to do at first, but when you ignore the obsessions by not giving in and performing these rituals, the OCD will greatly subside. over a few months time of ignoring rituals it will become easier and easier to not do this. Then it will become more of a maintainence for you to not do rituals. The strength of the OCD symptoms will now greatly reduce. I also learned to do rituals in my mind so I don't look funny to other people doing strange movements. you can learn to get a handle on this. as i got into my teens i was able to hide my symptoms from others by shifting focus of the rituals being performed in my mind. after you have shifted this focus then you realize that you can control, ignore and cut down on your symptoms. good luck. ; ocd is a really wild and wicked disorder, is it not? cut down on stress and work on ignoring your ocd, when you get the impulse to do a ritual like shake your hands or touch something, don't. and say to your ocd, "i know thats just you ocd and your not gonna disrupt my life" focus your mind elsewhere so you can shake the anxiety of not doing a ritual. it gets easier to ignore over short time."

misunderstood replied: "Ok. first of all I do have OCD. I count my stove burners, and when I shut the door I will pull on it and count how many times. One Dr. I had sugg. drugs but I am dealing with it w/out any. You need to relax and walk away from the problem. After chilling for a minute rethink... at least that's what helps me"

ultra1niner replied: "please find a hobby or someone to talk to and basically your mind has nothing to elevate with. take a walk somewhere and don't turn back until you reached a small walking goal. take a long walk. take yourself out of your own element and what your used to. make yourself uncomfortable. go out of your box. it feels different but not necessarily bad. i believe adding more chemicals to a problem only layers the problem with another one."

Athene replied: "You explained on another thread that you felt better when away from home. I suggest this is for one or two reasons : the change of scenery gave your brain something to think about other than potentially-trivial negative matters, and/or that your home environment does not suit you. Perhaps there are pollutants where you inhabit. Perhaps whilst in Vegas you weren't sitting around doing very little. Can you will yourself to be more active, from home? Having insufficient fresh air is a common cause of perseverance (obsessive behaviour) BTW, in my experience Prozac increased perseverance. But you might find that it suits you. Ax ."

Black Adder replied: "You are asking for medical advise on Y?A yet will not listen to a doctor who prescribed medicine for you? Duh! Take the damn Prozac!"

They switched me to Lexapro and after 3 days I quit because of all the side effects. It's weird how different meds effect people differently, so be sure you're under a doctors care as you find out what works best for you."

Does Prozac treat OCD? 10 Points!? My doctor prescribed me Prozac for my OCD and Trichotillomania (hair pulling disorder). I was wondering if and why antidepressants work on anxiety disorders? Any experiences would be helpful =) Thanks!

emily replied: "Yes. My doctor put me on it, but I don't know how it works."

elizamy23 replied: "Yes. Prozac and other antianxiety/antidepressants help treat OCD because they all help with chemical imbalances. Anxiety Disorders do not necessarily preclude depression or depression Anxiety Disorders. Essentially, most Anxiety Disorders are caused by chemical imbalances and the targeted chemicals (usually serotonin, but can be any) are the same ones that antidepressants support to allieve depression."

Tony replied: "In moderation, and it wouldnt hurt to ask your doctor"

zyprexa, prozac for ocd? I've been having bad anxiety for about 8 and a half months. I visited my psychiatrist in early june. I was diagnosed with ocd , which was mostly obsessional. I was initially put on 10mg prozac with little success, then in july i was put on 20mg with also little success. Yesterday i saw my psychiatrist, because for the past couple of weeks I felt horrible. I felt very depressed, and that made my anxiety worse then what it always was, and caused very much distress. Since then I would always have suicidal thoughts frequently, and always saying things like "I wish i was dead". After a visit to the psychiatrist he prescribed 40mg prozac and gave me 2 packs of zyprexa, each tablet was 15mg, and told me at night to take half a tablet. Do you think it would be wise to use zyprexa, and prozac for ocd/depression?

saharaaj replied: "you can not afford to be pemanently on these medicines/drugs. They are meant to tide your stressful situation and do not provide cure . Cure has to come by change of life style and attitude to life, shedding over ambition and anxiety. do not read or implement self improvement books. these books are not meant for all type of persons"

Dale replied: "I wonder, sorry, if you've been misdiagnosed and have bipolar disorder. Check your family history for mood disorders and/ or substance abuse problems. The medication needed would be different. Good luck whatever the case. Ciao!"

Simon W replied: "Zyprexa is a horrible drug, it make you fat tired and depressed and will not help OCD. You would be better on 50mg Zoloft / Sertraline."

Abhishek B replied: "Hello you are living life of anxiety (ocd), i had lived my life with ocd for more than 15 years and i was continously fighting with ocd, again and again i failed to free from ocd, i had decided to go for gamma knife operation but my parents did not support me this was the big problem for me and i left my mba college due to ocd (not have dare to give presentation and after i cried alot) but today i free from ocd and i live my life like a tiger no fear only confidence, but from where i get this confidence? Only from special technique to free from ocd, you have to modify your thoughts this is the only technique to free from ocd, for more info on this topic visit and and i was also taking prozac, i got only 2 percent relief from it, so admit my suggestion, don't take medicine and any therapy just try to modify your thoughts in different styles."
