How long after finishing anitbiotic (penicillin) will the side effects stop? I finished it today, but I've had stomach cramps/aching and a nauseous feeling for the past 5 days... When will the side effects go away?!

PATRICIA MS replied: "Several days. One of the worst side effects for women is vaginal irritation. It will cease after several days."

How do I counteract the side effects of Penicillin?Pls help!? I am on a 5 day course of Penicillin for a gum infection. I am very sensitive to antibiotics (although not allergic) and I'm very nervous of any side-effects I might get. Apart from taking probiotics and vitamin C,what else could I do? I am prone to eczema, but otherwise quite healthy. I'm a vegan and never eat junk. I don't drink or smoke. Thanks!

Caleb F replied: "I won't even go into the whole vegan thing with you but I will tell you it will bite you in the *** later on. It does eveyone. Now for the penicillin there isn't really anything you can do to combat any side affects that you might get with it. As long as it is not an allergy that will threaten your well being or life all you can do is deal. Maybe next time you should ask for a synthetic anti biotic."

liz replied: "go back 2 the chemist and c the pharmacist, about it, do not leave that sort of prob."

old know all replied: "The worst you'll get from a 5 day course is loose bowels in the morning and a slight rash on your arms. That's got to be better than a gum infection. Probiotics will help the gut to recover (if you weren't vegan, I'd suggest plenty of live yoghurt). The rash will sort itself out although a bit of sunlight will help."

cutup replied: "I can sympathise - the couple of times Ive had to take an anti-biotic I've felt terribly sick. However dont fret because its only temporary so grit your teeth and it will pass. Alternatively you could ask your doc if theres a topical anti biotic you could use - i.e. - an antibiotic gel or cream that is used externally. Maybe not as likely for a mouth infection but you certainly get them for other infections. Its worth asking!"

Raven Eyes JPA replied: "I'm not going to waste my time responding to the first reply. A PROPER vegan diet is completely healthy and will not bite anyone anywhere. Look at upping your intake of food rich in antioxidants - blueberries etc. Make sure that you are drinking 2 - 3 litres of water a day to keep yourself well hydrated, and you should be just fine. Of course, I don't need to remind you that if the side effects are problematic, that you should report them to your doctor. Hope this helps."

Victoria replied: "Taking Vitamin B complex helps the digestive side effects. I get nausea from taking anti biotics so I usually buy an over the counter anti sickness tablet eg. domperidone."

Pisceswoman_65 replied: "If you are sensitive to antibiotics but not allergic there is not much that can be done to counteract the reaction beforehand. I know that a corticosteroid can be introduced after the reaction is underway but that is quite risky unless your reaction is severe. Speak with your doctor to get further input, he/she is the best barometer of what you should do at this point in time. Good luck!"

sashs.geo replied: "Could you come off the vegan diet for 5 days? If so live yoghurt is one of the best and natural products to put your gut back to how it should be. Take the antibiotics with water only. Some fruit juices can interact with antibiotics so either don't drink them or drink several hours after your pills."

What are the side effects of penicillin and other antibiotics? Has anyone had any problems when taking antibiotics? also, what are some of the things you shouldn't drink,(besides alcohol) with antibiotics? Thank you for your comments. :)

la madre de quattro replied: "well, you just have to follow the directions on the bottle, some say take with food and some say don't. If you don't, then dont take with milk. You should never take any meds or vitamins with Tea. Tea leeches everything from whatever you eat with it, so anything you want to absorb into your bloodstream shouldn't be had in conjunction with tea. Most antibiotics dont have many side effects other than killing the germ, however, penicillin is notorious for causing a yeast infection in women cause it kills so much bacteria that it kills the good bacteria as well as the bad. I would recommend zithromax instead and always finish your meds. Not finishing a per ion makes the strain stronger and then in turn creates super bugs and can kill people in the future."

What are side effects of taking injection of penicillin-12 lakhs? What are side effects of taking injection of penicillin-12 lakhs

K T replied: "no really side effects other for that dose"

Ramabadhranandha R replied: "As for I know penicillin can be given any amount, there are only two groups of penicillin inj is available 1.procaine penicillin which used to kids aged up to 7 years min, and other is used for sexually transmitted decease by a dermatologist."

Penicillin Side Effects? I am almost finished with a week long course of penicillin for an infected tooth. I was told to take 4 500mg tablets a day. This was all well and good until I noticed peeling on my face about two nights ago. It never extended past my cheeks nose and forehead. Could this possibly be a harmful sided effect of the penicillin? Should I be worried? Note: Up until that time i had also been using a heating pad to reduce swelling so it could be that

I do care! replied: "Skin peeling is not a known side effect to this medication. However having the heat pad on your face would have just lightly 'cooked' your top layer of skin, like sunburn, and is now peeling. If you are allergic to Penicillin you tend to, BUT not always, virtually show serious side effects straight away."

Hakit. replied: "As a young man I was given penicillin for a minor infection. However, I just was not responding / in fact I was going down & no one could understand why! My Fathers friend a military doctor happened to stop by the house and of course he had a look at me! Only seconds looking - then told my Dad to call an ambulance - Now! On arrival in the local cottage hospital Dad and his Doc mate wheeled me inside (the Doc having words with it tuned out a mate Doc of his) and in seconds I was being given anti penicillin injections! It later determined I was allergic to penicillin, however, the local doc who'd initially pumped it into me, didn't realize my symptom reactions! I recovered of course and felt great. Some time went passed and in the interim I joined the military! Then later I had a couple of dizzy spells with my eyesight going blurred! Turned out the penicillin was the cause! Managed to stay in the military but had to work at it due to sometimes suffering slightly impaired vision! Kept my mouth shut + mates in the know including a couple of medics helped me out on occasion! Years on, the problems still with me! But I manage, I get by!"

Penicillin side effects have been lasting over a week after i stopped? I took penicillin for about 3 days to get rid of tonsillitis. Ever since I started taking it, and stopped about 8 days ago, I've felt like i'm going to throw up 24/7. I've only actually thrown up a couple times, but i always feel like i'm going to, especially about an hour after i eat. When i walk, talk, do anything at all it gets worse. My friends have been telling me to eat yogurt, and i have for the last 3 days, and i still feel horrible. what's wrong and what can i do to feel better?

tosspottery replied: "Try ginger ale for the nausea, it usually helps em. It seems you are having an allergic reaction to the penicillin. Call your doc right away and tell him/her what's going on. The doc is best person to tell you what to do."

Will I have any side effects from taking penicillin if I don't have anything? I recently went to an STD testing center, yeah please don't judge but I was scared... um...>_< perhaps it is because I mentioned Syphilis to one of the counselors that I was given penicillin anyhow I don't think I have an STD but they gave me the penicillin just to be sure I suppose and my test results will likely be negative so can I get any side effects by taking the medication if I don't have anything? :D

amberj replied: "Not really, where you run into trouble is not taking all the medication as prescribed. You run the risk of helping the organism turn into a superbug, it may mutate and then PCN will not be effective. Please take all antibiotics as prescribed."

liz down under replied: "Taking antibiotics can upset your normal flora and so make you more susceptible to yeast infections. They can also intefere with absorption of the contraceptive pill so if you are using that you should use another method to protect yourself. Some people are allergic to penicillin but if that applied to you you would know about it by now."

John de Witt replied: "The risk is small, but not much smaller than if you did have syphilis. Most of the adverse effects of drugs are not related to the disease they're used to treat."

Zeep replied: "All drugs have side effects, but if you aren't allergic to penicillin, they ought to be minimal or not noticeable. Because of the concern about allergies, I'm a bit surprised you were given penicillin without a diagnosis. Or that you'd be taking it orally - the usual treatment for this STD is a single injection. If you have a contact with syphilis, however, it makes sense that you'd get antibiotics before getting test results."

can i take benedryl and penicillin together without getting any side effects? Prednisone apparently lowers my immune system, so i was wondering if i could take benedryl as an allergy reliever instead?

OhfoureiqhtL replied: "hmm... did u try asking your doctor this first instead of yahooing it? u dont want to take something and then u gonna have bad side effects."

Heather replied: "No unless you consulted with your doctor I would not suggest this. Although medicines can be helpful, if they're mixed then can give you very bad side effects."

Side effects of penicillin? I have been prescribed a course of penicillin for bacterial Laryngitis. I have to take 4 tablets a day for 7 days. This is my second day on them and I have recently taken my 6th tablet. However, yesterday I noticed alot of vaginal discharge and about half an hour ago, I just had diarrhoea. I have also been feeling only the slightest bit nauseous (only enough to effect my appetite slightly) I'm gathering these are from the tablets because I read through the leaflet that came with the tablets and those side effects were listed but it says they do not occur in most cases. Plus, I have to take the tablets an hour before food or on an empty stomach which has meant that I haven't really eated much at all, so I don't think there is a huge chance of the diarrhoea being caused by anything else. Shall I just continue taking the tablets? Or shall I tell my doctor? Or maybe should I carry on and go see my doctor later if the side effects persist...what do you think? *which has meant that I haven't really eaten much at all (sorry, I don't want people to think I'm stupid XD)

AndrewL replied: "im allergic so i get purple dots all around me"

Kathleen replied: "Take the pills until they are finished. You should only stop taking them if you have an allergy to them (usually hives, itching, difficulty breathing, etc.). Eat bananas and/or cheese to counter-effect the diarrhea. It's not uncommon to have a yeast infection since the penicillin will unbalance your natural bacteria as well. So pick up something from the drugstore for it."

D S replied: "You should talk to your doctor as this could be a pre-cursor to an allergic reaction You should also take pro-biotics yougurt drinks and you can also get high dose tablets the penicillin kills both the good and bad bacteria you need to replace the good"

Cody replied: "You may want to ask your doctor, however, you must know that everyone reacts to drugs differently...especially penicillin. Penicillin is derived from another type of bacteria, which is why in many cases of people being allergic to it, there are many alternatives. Medical technology has come a long way. Also, through infections alone can cause very adverse affects on your body. Even a small ulser can cause swelling of the glands, headaches, nausea, etc. Check with your Dr., but remember...he went to med school for at least 6-8 years...he should know a little about something."

Bren replied: "different people experience different side effects unfortunately diarrhoea is one for some people. if they say u have to take on an empty stomach then u have to do that . that is because some medication works better when not mixed with food, if the side effects are unbearable then tell yr doctor, u may find they settle down after 2 - 3 days but if not then tell yr doctor and maybe they can prescribe u a different antibiotic"

What are side effects of penicillin? When not allergic to penicillin, Does penicillin compromise the immune system like zosyn or Gent does. You know its good but also bad because it gets rid of the good bacteria as well. I took some penicillin prescribed by my dentist and after it begin to settle in( after a few uses) one morning I got that symptom in my chest area (like when your catching a cold) when usually I have a real good immune system and rarely catch even colds when other people around me suffer from it. So I stopped taking them. I know your supposed to continue until prescribed to stop but I felt better the next morning. At any rate if I start back up with the penicillin then at least I can be prepared to face its side effects.

mark replied: "ask the doctor"

Truman D replied: "None normally. Do not stop taking them just because you feel better you just still take them for at least a week because the virus can fight back wants you stop taking them. It also depends what type of penicillin it is for e.g. penicillin VK."

oisian88 replied: "You should always continue an antibiotic for the whole course, no matter how well you feel or if you have a side effect that is mild. What happens now is the bacteria that the drug was fighting has a chance to fight back and strengthen itself. Increasing it's resistance to the drug. Then you have to take a stronger drug and so on ad infinitum. [sp] Your cold symptoms could just be an outward sign of the drug versus bug battle that's going on in your system right now. All chemistry experiments have some kind of reaction :-) Hope you feel better soon."

lexilovescoco replied: "It depends on the person taking the penciling. How do you know your not allergic to penicillin? Allergic reactions can occur later in a persons life. Also, in very rare cases penicillin can temporarily weaken your immune system, causing you to have the symptom of a cold. You should keep taking the penicillin because it doesn't take action and stop weakening your immune system until you take it for 1-3 weeks. Again it depends on the person."

W H replied: "YA is a fine and FUN place but it is NOT in your best interests to ask queries about prescribed medication here. I know you are no longer taking your anti-biotic but the same advice stands. Please direct ALL queries about prescribed medication to the Doctor who prescribed your medication or the Pharmacist who dispensed it. Wrong advice may cause untold Harm. Anyone on YA can answer this query pretending to have pharmaceutical knowledge. Below I have given you four links all for balance. One about the medicine, two about how it works and the last written in an easy format with humour. "
