Are there other causes for Fluid Retention? I have extraordinary High Blood Pressure and am taking lisinopril, lasix, lopressor, aspirin and nexium to counter the effects. In the last 6 months, I have gained 100 Pounds at a rate of 5 to 10 pounds per week and in the last 3 months have experienced swelling of the feet, calves and knees which subside over night only to return by noon the next day. I have been checked for diabetes, congestive heart failure and my lungs sound clear. Please help me understand the weight gain and its reversal.

mmmm replied: "you need to see a good cardioligist as what you appear to have is congestive heart failure ' swelling of feet ankels . do you have shortness of breath at times ? your weght gain and swelling of feet all point to heart problem . shortness of breath is the next symptom see a a good cardioligist"

formerly_bob replied: "If congestive heart failure is ruled out, the most likely reasons for fluid retention are endocrine problems (usually adrenal gland) or kidney problems. If the fluid is primarily in the legs, you could have a condition where the valves in your veins aren't working correctly. Make an appointment with your doc to get a blood test that checks for Cushings syndrome."

TweetyBird replied: ""Are there other causes for Fluid Retention?" -- Yes there are. Other possible causes include thyroid dysfunction, renal disease, lymphedema, liver disorders, filariasis, protein deficiencies and renal conditions. Glad you don't have wet lungs. Aspirin and Nexium don't treat hypertension. Is the weight gain all fluid or mostly fat? What was your weight like before this happened? What is your diet like now? Are you currently on fluid restrictions? Have you always been hypertensive? I can't help you understand the extraordinary weight gain you've had nor can I help you understand it's "reversal". I don't know why this has happened. Have you have the following: liver function tests, kidney function tests, thyroid function tests and total serum protein, albumin & pre-albumin blood tests? Have you had your lymphatic system evaluated for obstructions, etc.? I don't have enough information about you but if you can honestly & thoroughly answer every single question I've asked you, this will guide me."

I look in his eyes n he saves me replied: "Hi There are many diffenernty ways and reason why you retain fluids. I have added a link for you Hope this helps xx"

I need some medical expertise from my fellow answers buddies. My boyfriend has been to numerous doctors? for the following symptoms, while he sleeps, he produces excess saliva to the point where he vomits in his sleep, he feels like he is swallowing his tongue. The doctors have given him Nexium for years, and it has no healing effect. Everyday he goes through this, sometimes when he is awake too. Has the excess saliva, coughs so much, then throws up. Please if anyone has experienced this please reply! I thank you all in advance for your time and participation. My boyfriend is 39, has high blood pressure and is on meds for that, just additional details if it will help.

mrscmmckim replied: "Check this site to see if it can help you guys. Good Luck! "

mlgable replied: "Have him try taking mucinex at bedtime and claritin aka loratidine daily. If this doesn't help then he should find a doc who will prescribe something to help dry up his secrections like scopolomine patches."

vamedic4 replied: "I'm sorry to hear about your boyfriend. The following is some information for the two of you. Hypersalivation Question What are the common or uncommon etiologies for hypersalivation? Is there any specific treatment? Response from Erica Brownfield, MD Assistant Professor of Medicine, Department of Medicine, Emory University School of Medicine, Atlanta, Georgia; Staff Physician, Department of Medicine, Grady Memorial Hospital, Atlanta, Georgia Saliva is produced in and secreted from the salivary glands in the body and functions to initiate digestion. The secretion of saliva is under the control of the autonomic nervous system. Hypersalivation, or increased saliva, can be caused by overproduction or decreased clearance of saliva. There are many medical conditions that can cause hypersalivation; therefore, it is a common symptom. Causes of saliva overproduction include pregnancy, excessive starch intake, gastroesophageal reflux disease, pancreatitis, liver disease, serotonin syndrome, oral ulcers, and oral infections. Medications that can cause saliva overproduction include clozapine, pilocarpine, ketamine, and potassium chlorate. Toxins can also cause hypersalivation. These include mercury, copper, organophosphates, and arsenic. Causes of hypersalivation due to decreased clearance of saliva include infections such as tonsillitis, retropharyngeal and peritonsillar abscesses, epiglottitis, and mumps. It can also be caused by problems with the jaw such as fracture or dis ; radiation therapy; and neurologic disorders such as myasthenia gravis, Parkinson's disease, rabies, bulbar paralysis, bilateral facial nerve palsy, and hypoglossal nerve palsy. Treatment of hypersalivation should be directed toward the underlying cause. Some patients find relief with use of mouthwash and tooth brushing, which might have a drying effect"

Morgan replied: "the doctor just might be retarded nexium has nothing to do with your salivary glands but is used for stomach problems. see a specialist that has something to do with oral care or hormones. vomiting in your sleep is very dangerous...inhaling vomit aka drowning in it."

EMT-B replied: "Is it really saliva. another condition may cause what looks like excess saliva. that is a extreme case of post nasal drip. Does he have sinus problems. He may want to try something like benadryl for a few days to see if that helps."

Pls., can anybody help me? ... green, soft stool-- why? Events: Sept. 15-20-- menstruation with dysmenorrhea plus high blood pressure; well-formed big, brown stool I took Buscopan once for the stomach cramps. After a couple of days, felt nauseous, so I took domperidone Then I had a loose stool-- yellow Ate green vegies (broccoli, etc.) My stool turned to green. Since it is a bit loose, I took immodium once. Question: My stool has been green for three days now. What is causing it? Is it the grape jelo? Is it blood pressure medication which I started taking (Micardis) that's also causing diarrhea? Another thing, I've not gone back to my regular solid meals. I'm into soft diet... This is the third day, why is my stool still green? I noticed also that due to not eating my regular meals, I became suddenly acidic and been taking Nexium, twice already. What's with the green stool? How can I change it back to brown? I'm also feeling tired and sleepy and feels full since the dysmenorrhea and the high blood pressure. A BIG THANKS

applecandey replied: "you should vist your doctor its har to tell whats happening to you online"

country girl replied: "It's the grape jello. Anything that purple color will cause green stool. Lay off the grape jello and don't do red either. Good luck!"

Concerned about blood pressure - please help!? I am 23 yr old female, don't smoke, drink or do drugs, eat like a normal American I'd say and my BP is usually around 120/70. I got on the birth control pill "Yasmin" and my BP was always around 160/75 so they switched me to "Ortho tri-cyclen lo". Now my BP is usually 140/75. But that is still high isn't it? I also recently started taking 10 mg a day of Adderall and I have been taking 40 mg of Nexium for about 4 months. None of this started until the BCP so should I get off of them? The Adderall has made my BP around 140/95 which I was told that bottom number is low. Any suggestions would be appreciated! I just had a baby 10 months ago and don't want another right away, I am allergic to latex and don't want the shot or IUD, so what are any other options? The BCP has broken my face out too!

Joanne A. W replied: "Please check with a doctor. Sit down with her and go over all options."

H.E. W replied: "GO BACK TO THE DOCTOR AND TELL HIM!!!!! OR CHANGE DOCTORS. US PLAIN HUMANS CAN'T HELP YOU, OR HAVE ANY BUSINESS DIAGNOSING YOUR PROBLEM.GOOD LUCK, CONGRATS ON NEW BABY"

Lili replied: "Honestly, with everything you have going on, different meds, etc, I should think your doctor would be the best one to go to for help. My doctor prescribed three different meds at different times for me, until one worked well. Everyone is different and responds differently to some meds. On here you will probably get a lot of different answers from different people and while some of them mean well, they are not your doctor. Please talk with your physician about this, and if you don't trust his/her judgement, find another doctor. Best of success, Lili"

spychic19 replied: "Adderall is most likely giving the high blood pressure reading. (Amphetamines)"

Mom replied: "140/75 is a little higher than one would expect a young healthy person's BP to be, yes, but it's better than 160/75. & it's certainly better than 140/95. I was on a supposedly low-dose BCP & my BP shot up to 130/80 & I was seeing stars. Not good. I got off the pill entirely & my BP came down to more normal (for me) readings of 110/60. Blood pressure is determined by the amount of blood your heart pumps and the amount of resistance to blood flow in your arteries. The more blood your heart pumps and the narrower your arteries, the higher your blood pressure. Certain medications including *birth control pills*, cold remedies, decongestants, over-the-counter pain relievers and some pre ion drugs also may cause hypertension (high blood pressure). I don't mean to scare you, but go to the Mayo Clinic website (see below) & click on "complications" to read about why you want your BP to be a little lower ... You may want to consider the condom ... at least for a while until you get your meds straightened out. Best to you."

I have anemia. I have had endoscopy.colonoscopy and capsule endoscopy but no bleedings is found, what's next? I am a 55 year old male. I eat a normal healthy diet. I occasionally get fatigued but have had anemia for 6 years. The doctors, gastro, henatologist can find no cause. I take iron tablets and eat red meat and veges so what is next. I am concerned that there appears to be no real reason for the anemia. I would appreciate comments as I am really very concerned. I do have high blood pressure and am taking medication I also have GURD and am taking nexium to reduce the acid flow etc.

Red_F replied: "Do you take a multi vitamin with Chromium Picolinate in it? Chromium is in most vitamins and in 1% of the population it causes your system to not produce red blood cells. I had it happen to me and once I stopped the vitamins, it went away. It took months of testing from Doctors and they never found the cause. I just stopped taking the vitamins and got better. I then asked the Doctor and he explained that Chromium does have that effect in a small percent of the pop."

Linda R replied: "Ask the doctors to evaluate you for lupus. Lupus can cause bone marrow failure. I know, it happened to me and nearly killed me. What you want is a referral to a rheumatologist experienced in lupus."

Monique replied: "i have iron deficiency anemia and it has gotten worse in the past few years. What I done was increased my Vitiam C intake and take the iron pills on an empty stomach. That helps with the iron absorb better and quicker in the body. Is it possible that your other meds are causing it? I know the feeling when they can't explain or figure out why you are the way you are. I hope you find an answer soon."

Left-sided chest pain radiating to back/shoulder blade? Could this be secondary to accidentally taking one 1080 mg tablet of Urocit-K (my husband's medicine)? I thought I was taking my multivitamin which looks almost identical. I just left it alone and went to bed, and now I have this pain described in the title which comes and goes. It's seeming to detensify a little bit, maybe. Additional Details: * I am a 35-year-old female. * I have lost 85 pounds and have about 35-40 more pounds to lose. * My blood work is picture-perfect except for slightly low thyroid, including cholesterol total of 146 and fasting glucose of 70. * I am on Dilantin, Nexium, levothyroxine (0.25 mg), and multivitamin. * I have a home blood pressure machine and my reading just now was 117/72 with a heart rate of 85 (with no abnormal heart rhythms, according to the machine. (Side note: I have no history of high blood pressure, but my dad does and my mom did, so I still take my pressures every day even though they're always normal.)

laineyette replied: "You really should get to an ER and have them run an ekg to rule out heart attack. A b/p machine is not going to show a heart attack...you could have a normal pulse and b/p and still be having one."

Chest pain same time every day? Having chest pain left and right sided (mostly left) 34, controlled mild high blood pressure, I also have panic attacks. My doc contributed to acid reflux and anxiety. Had EKG, normal. I was put first on Nexium, now on Aciphex, helped for about a week, now for the past couple days getting the pains again, seem to be about the same time of the day, the panic doesnt help, why would they occur at the same time for days at a time (about 3 or 4 in the afternoon) should I have more followp heart testing?

adelllbee replied: "Well it's always good to keep your doctor updated on what's going on, but it probably is anxiety. If it happens at the same time every day.... well then the time approaches and you probably focus on your chest whether you mean to or not thinking, "Ok... it's that time again, how's my heart doing? Is it happening again?" Then because you are focused on your heart and worried it happens. I'm not a doctor, so I can't say for sure, but I have these problems myself with my heart and so far the only explanation I've gotten as been anxiety annnndd well... I'm not dead yet, so that's a good sign. Good luck!! Try not to panic."

Please help! What complications with medication interactions are normal? My grandfather is taking Synthroid Lisinopril and Nexium. Today I find out he is having issues with his left arm and hand and he's not able to hold stuff or feel change in his pocket. If he tried to pick up a sheet of paper, he'd drop it...he doesn't have the sensitivity to be able to hold it. He's under medical care and been going to a doctor for 13 years, but I'm concerned he's being over drugged. He originally went on the thryoid medication and then he was put on the high blood pressure medicine. He also has vertigo, but doesn't take anything for it. He is 79 and I know he's getting old, but he means so much to me and I'm extremely concerned! And why does he get really bad cramps in his legs and in his ribcage?

Jsmooth46675 replied: "Go to the ER.....emergency room.....NOW"

Moped Mama replied: "well he could of had a stroke does he drool or mouth droopy does he have trouble talking or jumble words or thoughts ? call the dr who rx the medication ? lisinoproil ? now synthroid is suppose to be taken on an EMPTY stomach and wait 30-1 hr before eating? he could be diabetic starting neuropathy loosing texture , now leg cramps you need potassium , magnesium and calcium these are heart related see A Dr, search his rx online and see what you think? tell your mother what is happening if you ca't tell grandma?"

Lisinopril side effects, cough? I was on Lisinopril (I think 10 mg) and developed the dry cough that was a bit of a pain. My pharmacist insisted I need to get off the med imediately although my doctor didn't seem that concerned. Other than the cough this medication worked fabulous for me. I am a woman, 46 and overweight--although basically healthy--the high blood pressure is pretty recent for me (within last 2 years). My doctor put me on Verapamil which has not worked nearly as well for me. I'm now on it twice a day and have developed really annoying digestion problems, which I now treat with lots of fiber, etc. Constant bother. My question is (you knew I'd get to it eventually) is HOW serious is the Lisinopril cough? I would like to go back on this drug and am getting conflicted opinions between doctor and pharmacist. Can the cough ever resolve itself? The pharmacist said it causes a build of of "restin" in lungs that is dangerous...doctor not so worried. I also take a daily Nexium for previous ulcers..that med works well. I should also say that I have a goal to be off of this stuff soon by limiting salt (I like it way too much) and losing some weight and exercising. Thanks for any insight you can offer me here. I am not one to ask for strangers opinion but when two people you trust give opposite opinions it tends to confuse. Happy 2009!

Barry G replied: "Lisinopril 'cough', while not serious, is quite common. Lisinopril belongs to a family of drugs called angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors. ACE-inhibitors are most commonly used to treat high blood pressure as well as other conditions. These drugs are usually well tolerated, but are not without side effects. As mentioned, cough is a common side effect for the entire class of ACE-inhibitors. The incidence of cough may be somewhat less with other ACE-inhibitors. Over-the-counter or pre ion cough supressants will not help. You can try to switch to a different ACE-inhibitor (with lower incidence of cough) or switch to a different class of drugs (which is what your physician has done). Once the ACE-inhibitor clears from your system, the cough should subside. This may take several days or weeks."

angelbaby391802 replied: "Your question caused me to question myself about the cough that I have. I sing in church and this cough has been so bad that I think about quitting the choir. I cough at night and it keeps me awake. I am 61 and I don't sleep enough as it is. I try not to sit very close to anyone because of the cough. I tell them I am not sick that I have a nagging cough. The cough also cause me to choke on the least bite of food. I never thought about Lisinopril being the cause. That is one of the side affects. I will call my Dr. today and get an appt. to get this medicine changed. By the way I have ulcers also and I did take the Nexium at one time but I don't seem to need it anymore. You can get off a lot of medicines if you lose weight but remember never to take yourself off. Always consult your Dr. first. I know you would do that. Thanks again for asking that question. The cough is bad enough to make me miserable."

indy replied: "Have you mentioned how long you had taken Lisinopril for the first time? Cause it is only adverse effect of ACE Inhibitor drugs (i.e Lisinopril) which is temporary for first days of use in adjusting to your body. The cough is believed to be associated to the increase of Bradykinin level ( it has effect on airway tract which decreases the production of mucus in the airway tract, it is also involves in mechanism of pain). But if the condition persists, then it is best to see the doctor explain and ask if you he can prescribe Angiotensin II Inhibitor drug for you as a change. Cause this type has no adverse effect like dry cough though it has the same effect as ACE Inhibitor (Lisinopril). But basicly ACE inhibitor as Hypertension therapy is relatively safe, your not so worried doctor has the right to be. It is good that you are aware of your current conditon, and it is very right of you to start a healthy lifestyle. You should hopefully be able to be off this stuff soon if you are consistent and determined. Take care"
