Has anyone in Canada ever been able to sue the makers of PAXIL for long term damage? Has anyone had long term effects from the use of Paxil or became toxic as a result of taking this drug?

sassy2sloppy replied: "my mom became addicted to this years ago when it first came out...they went to a lawyer and tried to get comensated for the therapy and money loss...couldnt happen because at the time it wasnt "known" to be addictive. I dont know if its still on the market...but warn all!"

ppv replied: "Paxil is an SSRI. It is one of the safest classes of medicine. Its benefits outweigh the side effects. General side effects are mostly present during the first 1-4 weeks while the body adapts to the drug. Almost all SSRIs are known to cause either one or more of these symptoms. A person receiving paroxetine treatment may experience a few, all, or none of the following side-effects, and most side-effects will disappear or lessen with continued treatment, though some may last throughout the duration. Nausea Drowsiness Headache Changes in weight and appetite Changes in sexual behaviour Increased feelings of depression and anxiety (initially) Dry mouth Constipation Diarrhea Rash Restlessness or akathisia Itch Sodium depletion Changes in urination Sweating Muscle weakness Uncharacteristic levels of aggression Individuals experiencing any of the following symptoms should contact their doctor immediately: Jaw, neck, and back muscle spasms Fever, chills, sore throat, or flu-like symptoms Yellowing of the skin or eyes Black, tarry stools (this can indicate upper GI bleeding) Despite these side effects, Paroxetine is effective and generally well-tolerated in adults. Paroxetine is a useful tool in treating major depression, particularly in adults who have not responded to other therapies"

HarleyMan replied: "Why just Canada? Paxil is one of those drugs that a physician that knows better should not prescribe. When I was going through Menopause I was put on Paxil to ease the side effects of it. It was great, I felt great, I had a sex drive again, I also gained 20 pounds! Went back to the doctor and she told me that Paxil triggered the brain in some people to store all your food intake. Go figure! I am now on Effexor XL. No more side affects and it has not done what Paxil did for my sex drive. It can be addicting, so I have learned since then. You did not say exactly why you were interested in this?"

Dmitrii N replied: "I suggest you can answer a professional live support at for example. Or search some related articles in google or yahoo."

menhary replied: "yes I have severe PANES (persistent adverse neurological effects following SSRI discontinuation) email me if you want to compare notes, there have been lots of law suits, but usually something very tragic happened and it's the family that is left initiating the law suit, there are also class action suits that find the drug companies at fault, but class action means a huge group is suing so the financial reward has to be split, so each participant only gets a very small percentage"

Wellbutrin long term risks and effects? Trying to find online any info on this topic and cannot seem to locate what I'm looking for. I've been on Wellbutrin XL for going on 3 years now after weight gain on Paxil. I'm just concerned about overall long term effect.

fiVe replied: "It could be that you're not finding anything because there's nothing to find. I've been on Wellbutrin upwards of four years with no negative effects."

MissKathleen replied: "I don't know about online, but you can get a printout from your pharmacist of any possible side effects. I've been on Wellbutrin 300 mg for 4 years. Lost the 32 pounds that I gained on Seroquel. No other side effects. Gives me lots of energy. No depression for 4 years now."

Jess replied: ""They" really don't know about the long term effects of antidepressants...yet. For some, a medication that once really worked may become less effective over time. I've been on Wellbutrin for about 8 or 9 years and have never had any significant side effects from it and it is still effective for me."

What are the side effects for Paxil? I have just switched from Zoloft because of the side effects of drowsiness but then insomnia... Now I'm trying Paxil and the medical literature states lots of side effects including the above. Can anyone tell me if they have personally had any short or long-term side effects from Paxil. I took my first one today and I'm very nervous feeling with the same headache as I got from Zoloft. I know they're in the same family of SSRI's. Thanks.

Smiley_1995 replied: "Hi there: I dont have personal experience with taking any of the medications above, although I do know that I found a great website that has information about pre ion drugs and medication. It is: Just type in the name of the drug. Hope this helps in some way. Good Luck :)"

Ladyofathousandfaces replied: "Well i took it at its highest dosage, and i did not get any side effects or any use from it. It is from the family of Proxic which i am back on at its highest doseage for my OCD. Everyone varys so much on the different medications, you will just have to see if it works for you, Zoloft is just a spin off from Prozic too. So you are still using the same family of that main medication."

C J replied: "I took paxil for a while and did not notice any effects whatsoever, it was like popping candy. Finally settled on Welbutrin. That just made me feel like myself again with NO side effects. :)"

ragtad replied: "I was switched from ativan to Paxil to help with my anxiety. But the side effects were so bad for me that I had to stop them after a week. I was not sleeping, couldn't eat, had headaches, lost about five pounds and had lots of anxiety attachs. Everyone is different and I hope that your experience with Paxil is a lot better than mine. If not then go back to your doc right away and try something else. I was switched to lexapro and am doing a lot better."

Slip K replied: "taking ppaxil is like taking nothing at all. its one of those drugs you have to force yourself to believe is working."

wtoddw1 replied: "Hormonal problems is the main problem women suffer from depression. Read Steven Hotze's book "Health, Hormones, and Happiness." He also has a website where you can test yourself. Search his name on the Internet."

What are the long-term (>10 yrs) effects of taking an SSRI (like Paxil)? For women between 25-35 yo, and mainly the effects on the metabolism, thyroid, etc. Second part of the question, and Most important part, what is the best way to taper off, without having relapses of anxiety/depression?

TeriR replied: "There are no studies to determine the long-term effects. Sorry. The best way to taper off is always with the help of your doctor. If you have clinical depression, you may need to have an antidepressant to avoid depression and anxiety. Your doctor can help if you need to switch to a different medication. It's generally done by tapering down slowly to the lowest possible dose, then off."

Just_gone replied: "http://www.antidepressantsfacts.com/LongTermSSRI.htm That is just it. Gradually decrease the dosage. I have depression, and have decided no more meds, just cognitive therapy. The meds are as bad as the depression, or worse. The way that they are being advertized should never have been allowed!!"

Long term effects of antidepressants? What are the long term effects of antidpressants? Ive been on paxil for about 12 yrs and don't really want to rely on something that could be dangerous overtime. Doctors tend to side whith the pharmecutical companies findings so I'd like to know personal experiences of others like me. Is it possible to get off them without having a total relapse?

Cordona replied: "Well I have no personal experience in this matter, but I would assume that like any meds, there would be some with drawls."

jellybean replied: "read peter m. breggin "your drug may be your problem" or "toxic psychiatry""

versantly replied: "talk to your doctor about the effects. consider other options like counseling."

Hope replied: "Your condition and depression are unique to you. Whether you relapse when off the medication is up to the ability of your own body, as to whether it has been "jump-started" into making the required chemicals for itself, or if your body is incapable of that function. Work with your Dr's knowledge and monitoring if you do choose to go off the meds. You will not be feeling the full effect of how well your own body does on its own until 6 weeks to 3 months after finishing your pre ion meds. I, too have been on antidepressants medication for a number of years. What I have said here is what my Dr explained to me. I have chosen, with his advice, to stay on the medication. It is really such an individual thing, that blanket-statements just don't apply with anti-depressant medications."

L.K. replied: "There are no studies that have found that long term use of antidepressants are harmful as long as you follow your doctors instructions. I have been on various antidepressants since I was 19, I am in my mid 30's now. So I've been on them longer, and I feel fine. In fact I'd rather be on these antidepressants than not. They have saved my life. It's a matter "risk-vs-benefit". For me it is either take my medication or be so depressed that I can't get out of bed and always thinking of ways to kill my self, and attempting the best ways. So for me it is best that I continue with my medication. Like Hope said its all individualized and it depends on how your body is."

wlcme2thedllhouse replied: "12 years? really that's interesting a doctor would keep you on a medication that long. CHMP(Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use) gave a warning to prescribers recommending close monitoring of adult patients at high risk of suicidal behavior and/or suicidal thoughts. In other words, CHMP does not prohibit use of paroxetine(Paxil) with adults but stresses extreme caution in actual usage. Also withdrawal reactions upon stopping treatment is mentioned and therefore it is recommended to gradually reduce the dose over several weeks or months if decision of withdrawal is made. I took paxil for almost a year, but i stopped taking it b/c i was having these rages. my friend actually got $30,000 in a lawsuit from them (paxil) b/c it severely damaged his liver! he took it for 5 years."

Side effects of Paxil? Wondering what the long term side effects of Paxil are. And does it really work? I've been on and off Paxil for over a year, and currently on it for about 2 weeks. What is it doing to me?

Dorothy K replied: "All medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. Check with your doctor if any of these most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome: Anxiety; blurred vision; constipation; decreased sexual desire or ability; diarrhea; dizziness; drowsiness; dry mouth; gas; increased sweating; increased urination; loss of appetite; nausea; nervousness; stomach upset; trouble concentrating; trouble sleeping; unusual skin sensations; weakness; yawning. Seek medical attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur: Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); bizarre behavior; black or bloody stools; chest pain; exaggerated reflexes; fast or irregular heartbeat; fever, chills, or sore throat; hallucinations; loss of coordination; new or worsening agitation, panic attacks, aggressiveness, impulsiveness, irritability, hostility, exaggerated feeling of well-being, restlessness, or inability to sit still; persistent or severe ringing in the ears; persistent, painful erection; red, swollen, blistered, or peeling skin; seizures; severe or persistent anxiety or trouble sleeping; significant weight loss; stomach pain; suicidal thoughts or attempts; tremor; unusual bruising or bleeding; unusual or severe mental or mood changes; vision changes; worsening of depression."

ednolb replied: "it is an SSRI. Selective Seratonin Reuptake Inhibitor. It prevents your brain from "reuptaking" YOUR own seratonin. If your problem is that your brain doesn't make enough seratonin or you reuptake it too fast and feel depression because of it- Paxil should be fine. Your brain will get used to having the seratonin last longer so when you stop taking it- your brain will be looking for it and you will feel withdrawl symptoms. You may want to also eat foods rich in tryptophan-like turkey or milk- becuase that is the source your body needs to make seratonin. Good Luck"

Kenneth C replied: "you need to stay on the medication CONSISTENTLY for several weeks for a therapeutic level to establish in your bloodstream... then it will relieve the depression you have...in a slow therapeutic reactive manner unlike Prozac(Fluoretin) which is "happy days happy days"....then "die die die" understand that antidepressant medications are the largest prescribed medications in the WORLD. LOTS OF PEOPLE TO TALK TO"

I started taking Paxil when I was eleven, and now I'm sixteen, what are the effects? I'm 16 now and still on it, but i plan on getting off, I'm switching to Zoloft, then easing off that because my psychiatrist says it will be easier to get off then paxil. I heard that Paxil can harm babies if you take it while you are pregnant, I'm not pregnant, but since I was taking it while going through puberty, does that mean that when I plan to have children ( which i do for later on in life) will I have a higher chance of having problems? Will there be any long term effects that will stay with me even after I stop taking paxil? Do all the side effects go away after you get taken off?

Naguru replied: "Consult a gynecologist."

docjp replied: "The primary "effects" would be best known to yourself if you were able to experience what is going on within yourself. What is for certain is that you have lost five years of your life, and this cannot be obtained in this life.... but be not saddened, you can try to be aware of the same years in your next life. Hopefully you will be more selective in your choice of parents for your next life. One can experience Life, or one can deny Life and replace it with some form of fuzziness and let's pretend we are living while dropping the drugs. Look up any of several books that list the side effects of drugs on the system. You will be amazed to find that almost everything you are suffering is "caused" by the drugs you are taking. Please try to find a naturpath, homeopath or a competent therapist and allow them to ease you off the drugs. Peace"

Paxil, what don't they want you to know? My aunt has been on paxil now for a few years and she asked me to find out: what other drugs interact with paxil? long term and short term side effects? how to get off them? the last time she tried to get off them with the doctors help she got down to 15 mg's and became very sick. any suggestions? I am against any type of drug and all about natural medicine, and i would really like to help her. does anyone have any advice?

sapphire_630 replied: "I was on Paxil for almost two weeks and I was hallucinating to the point I ended up having to go to the ER. They gave me a couple days worth of xanax to counteract the Paxil and then I never took it again. When she gets her pre ion filled the pharmacist should include a phamplet of what is not safe to take with Paxil and side effects to watch out for. This is what I found The worst thing she can do is try to get off any psychotropic drug without doctor supervision, You definitely can't up and quit it. She might be best finding an alternative doctor that would know what she can take when she gets down to the 15mg point where she gets sick. I am not sure what is okay to take with Paxil to make a safe switch You can try asking this doc about how to make the switch"

Rebel Yell replied: "St. John's Wort is an herbal substitute for the anti-depressants. Now, bear with me, but I just finished reading Junky by Burroughs. He had some interesting things to say about weening off drugs. Substitute slowly with weaker medicines and then substitute with placebos. Natural endorphins created by increased cardio exercise such as long hikes or gym workouts along with healthy foods will greatly strengthen the body's tolerance of withdrawals. This will also help in a huge way cure her of the chemical imbalance that may cause her anxiety and/or depression!"

keithw8007 replied: "Paxil ... Paroxetine is a member of the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) family of drugs used to treat people with depression. Summary of Interactions with Vitamins, Herbs, and Foods follows ... In some cases, a herb or supplement may appear in more than one category, which may seem contradictory. For clarification, read the full article for details about the summarized interactions. Keith Woolley"

can someone please tell me about mixing xanex paxil and vivance together? these pre ions were all three prescribed by a doctor to take daily is this a bad combination and what would be the side effects as well as long term effects

Jane replied: "There is only one way of answering this question, ask your pharmacist! Doctors are all well and good at dishing out medications, but they can be pretty ignorant at the side effects of mixing them. If you have any worries ask your pharmacist, and if he or she has any concerns, then I suggest that you go back to your doctor and talk through with them, and don't take no for an answer. Good luck"
