Find Altace Medication What Is It For in Questions
What is the best medication for protecting kidneys in diabetics? I have been using Altace, but recently my doctor failed to fill my latest pre ion. It has only been two weeks since I have taken it, but I actually feel better since I have been off it. Are there any other medications out there I can suggest to my doctor. I did not realize how badly the Altace was affecting me until now, but I know I need a med for protecting my kidneys.

nusimaloo replied: "ACE inhibitors are the drugs of choice for kidney protection. If you were feeling unwell your doc should have been checking your U&E's. If you have to see him soon ask for this test and discuss the possibility of another, lower dose ACE inhibitor."

imsety replied: "See your health care provider as soon as possible for medication change. Common brand names: Delone, Detue, Lasix This is a very potent medication. Using too much of this drug can lead to serious water and mineral loss. Therefore, it is important that you are closely monitored by your doctor. Furosemide is a "water pill" (diuretic) that increases the amount of urine you make, which causes your body to get rid of excess water. This drug is used to treat high blood pressure. Lowering high blood pressure helps prevent stroke, heart attacks, and kidney problems. This medication also reduces swelling/fluid retention (edema) which can result from conditions such as congestive heart failure, liver disease, or kidney disease. This can help to improve symptoms such as trouble breathing. This medication may also be used to decrease excess calcium in the blood (hypercalcemia). I hope this helps you. And good luck."

Gary B replied: "Do you already have kidney damage? if not, then you do not need medication -- you need to keep your blood sugars under control. You want to PREVENT kidney damage rather the "protect" your kidneys medicine. if you already have impaired kidney function (less than 75%) THEN you need additional medicine. Lasix kept me from complete kidney failure for two years, until a transplant was available."

What is the best Blood Pressure Medication.? What is the best blood pressure medication with the least side effects ? I have tried Linsinopril, Diovan (valsartan), Atenolol, Altace. They all bring my blood pressure down some, except for Diovan. It doesnt. The rest have similar side effects. Dizziness, incoherent, lack of energy. Thank you for your response. I am at risk of a stroke each day.

MARY S replied: "why don t you try vasotec?"

Tsunami replied: "well am sure that you are taking a asprin right? that is one way to do this and if you are with stroke problems then you are taking warfarin or cumidone can't spell it. well anyhow i think linsinopril is the easiest one and its generic and costs 4 bucks at walmart. or sams are you doing that? let me knwo take care."

hecla 1 replied: "There is no "best" medication...it varies from person to person, not the same thing works for everyone...Make sure you are making lifestyle changes as well, diet, exercise, no smoking. There are some supplements that may help but are no means a replacement for medication if your blood pressure is out of control.....calcium, magnesium, potassium...CoQ10, essential fatty acids, garlic, L-carnitine, selenium, and vitamin E.....search each + hypertension (high blood pressure).....all medications have some side effects when your body is adjusting to them, the ones you have listed are common and just kind of come with the terriority....you just have to decide if the health benefits (lower blood pressure) out weigh the side effects."

matthew replied: "Unfortunately, all those side effects are very common with most BP medicines. If your BP is at stroke level, the simple fact that the medicine is working causes the dizziness. A sudden drop in your BP to normal levels causes all those side effects. They will get better as your body adjusts to a lower BP. It may take as long as 2 weeks for this to happen though. You might try a very low dose of 1 of those that worked & wait a week or so to slowly increase the dose. That way your body can slowly adjust to gradual decreases in your BP. From a previous answer, Vasotec is in the same family as Altace & lisinopril so it may have the same side effects. It is a good inexpensive choice. The others you have taken are all good 1st line choices. They actually have some of the better side effect profiles compared with other BP medicines. Good luck."

dcrc93 replied: "try lowering healthy lose wt if needed no salt use dash exercise"

Terry S replied: "It depends, but the best one for you is the one your doctor prescribes for you. Different types of BP meds do different things in different ways. Why don't people just listen to their doctor? If you're not going to listen to him/her why waste their time and your money going to them? Terry"

versantly replied: "the one that you and your doctor choose for you."

Seafood Allergy from Blood Pressure Medication? My father's doctor recently changed his blood pressure medication. He's now taking Quinapril (used to take Altace for 30 years)... he's been a seafood lover all his life and never had any problems eating any type of seafood, but now, (coincidentally??) since his med has been changed, he can't eat crabs without getting a runny nose, or sick in the stomach... could it be the med?

Zam replied: "Doubt it, but again try a day without it and see if happens."

Hatshepsut replied: "One never knows! This is my advice, contact the pharmacist rather than the doctor. I take a medication that prevents me from eating grapefruit. Odd huh? I'm not a fan of grapefruit anyway, but was a bit surprised to see a "no grapefruit" label on my pre ion bottle. There may be something in the shell fish that simply does not agree with that medication (mercury maybe?). The pharmacist will know but the doctor likely won't. It's a two minute call to the drug store. I'm curious now. lol. PS. Please do not suggest to your dad that he take a day off his meds! Even if he did, it is in his system and the reaction would likely be the same til that drug was totally gone. It's blood pressure medicine for crying out loud! You don't just quit for a day. Good luck."
